Real Talk is a mobile app that uses stories written by real teens to help middle school students learn about sexual health topics. Real Talk provides carefully curated stories about puberty and healthy relationships and connects teens with high-quality online resources on these topics. Our mission is to create a safe space for young teens to easily access and engage with content that will positively shape their sexual health knowledge and behaviors, and ultimately reduce rates of teen pregnancy among our users. Real Talk is owned by MyHealthEd, Inc., a tech nonprofit focused on transforming youth health education through technology.

Our team uses human-centered design and lean startup methodologies to generate hypotheses, gather user feedback, design prototypes and experiments, and rapidly test app features. We launched our iOS beta in September 2017 and will spend the next 3-6 months improving the content and building a more robust feature set.

The designer will be part of an exciting opportunity to optimize the first product of our early-stage company and make a difference in health and education outcomes for teens across the country. This is a contract position (January to May 2018, 10-15 hours / week) with the potential for transition to full-time employment.

Job Description

On our team, you will be the sole designer responsible for a mix of user experience and interaction design. You will be the expert on interface designs, typography, and screen layouts for mobile apps, web sites, other interactive media and additional communications materials, with a deep understanding of mobile-first and web responsive design. Your primary mission will be to design interactive and engaging features to drive user growth and retention, including promotional materials (e.g., on social media) to acquire new users. Ideal candidates will be passionate about doing work that has a meaningful impact on the world and bring positivity and enthusiasm to the team.

Your tasks will include:

-Identifying areas for improvement in the current product design and user experience, as well as devising elegant solutions that lead to a seamless, delightful user experience.
-Translating insights from our design research into intuitive and user-focused designs.
-Creating sketches, wireframes, user journeys, user scenarios, and mockups suitable for digital products on a wide range of devices and interfaces.
-User human-centered design principles to rapidly test and iterate on your designs.

We also expect you to:

-Design user-experiences ranging from low-fidelity sketches to hi-fidelity mockups ready for handoff.
-Communicate clearly and effectively about your design decisions, all of which should be grounded in our organization’s goals as well as your own design thinking and fundamental principles (i.e. color theory, visual weight, etc.).
-Be open to receiving objective critique and improving upon it.
-Collaborate with internal teams to interpret data from recently released product features to identify potential areas of improvement.
-Work with the product manager and development teams to ensure the feasibility of your designs and that design specifications are implemented with fidelity.
-Participate in bug tracking, bug fixing, and UI QA.
-Be knowledgeable of current UX trends and look for creative ideas and inspiration in parallel analogous worlds.
-Collaborate effectively with remote or distributed teams.

Requirements:

-Strong work portfolio that demonstrates stylistic breadth and attention to detail, experience with diverse content and subject matter, and a deep understanding of UI/UX best practices.
-Experience using standard design tools, including Photoshop, Sketch, and InVision.
-Strong ability to recognize and predict use cases and user interaction, including typical use as well as edge and corner cases, and incorporate them into designs.
-Deep understanding of information architecture and user psychology.
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills – this is crucial for working across technical and non-technical teams.
-Ability to manage time wisely across projects and competing priorities, meet agreed upon deadlines, and be accountable for work.

Preferred qualifications:


-Experience working with teens in formal or informal settings.
-Experience in the agile process of software development, working with development teams, and providing specifications and visual assets.
-Experience working with remote teams.
-Experience with an early-stage startup.
