Caktus builds web and mobile apps with Django. We’ve built over 100 custom solutions that have reached more than 73.8 million people globally. We’re enthusiastic about solving complex challenges especially when they have a social impact. In addition to building the world’s first SMS voter registration project in Libya, we’ve also built applications for InDemand, Discovery, PBS, Mozilla, and UNICEF. We're looking for someone like you to join our sharp team and become a part of an open, collaborative culture that puts quality at the heart of each project.
Do you love to design for the web? Are you accustomed to an iterative discovery and development process? Our small, yet strong team excels at producing clean, user-friendly interfaces for complex web apps and tackling new and diverse projects. If you have between 10 and 30 hours per week available, we would like to develop a long-term relationship with you on a project by project basis. This position requires on site work in our Durham, NC office.
As a web designer, you will:
-Work jointly with the development team to get a feel for Caktus' development process.
-Follow agile development methodologies and take part in weekly team meetings and standups.
-Attend discovery workshops with customers to determine project requirements, participate in user story mapping, and define new projects with the rest of the team.
-Participate in regular co-design sessions with our UX designers and web developers. Collaboratively build UIs, collect input on development feasibility, and answer UI-related questions.
-Establish visual styles using customer-provided branding guidelines for projects. Utilize a variety of techniques, such as mood boards, style tiles, UI kits, etc.
-Design UI elements and page components for user stories in an iterative fashion.
-For each project, design base styles and reusable components in a live style guide in HTML/CSS based on Caktus’ general purpose style guide. Use these components to develop consistent and clean UI.
-Collaborate closely to design and implement user stories within development cycles. Share working, live software (as opposed to static mockups) with customers. Collect and incorporate client comments and feedback.
If you are a professional visual designer for web who loves working on a small team and is excited to make highly customized web apps we urge you to apply. Previous experience working as an independent contractor is also desirable. Your deep understanding of front-end HTML/CSS techniques will improve our team's expertise. Any insight on the latest development best practices and tools you can bring to our toolkit will be highly valued. Experience in these areas, as well as a real passion for modular design and a familiarity with the "atomic" approach to web design, will make for a phenomenal partnership.
-Submit application via our website.
-Cover letter required.
