The Creative and User Experience (CrUX) team is seeking an Information Architect/User Experience Designer to join the Office of Information Technology (OIT). The IA/UX Designer is a creative thinker able to translate business strategies and creative concepts into useful and intuitive experiences across various types of web platforms. The position is responsible for organizing and structuring content, and collaborating with the team on user experience design for Duke University and Duke Health websites. The process includes site and content discovery, usability and accessibility assessment and testing, taxonomy development, site and application wire-framing, content development and management, maintenance usability review and QA, and general consultancy.

The position requires a genuine passion for user research and UX best practices and the ability to assess the feasibility of projects, write requirements and specifications, and research and recommend solutions. This position reports to the Manager of Creative and UX in OIT.

Work Performed
• Work closely with the Creative + User Experience (CrUX) team and development teams to deliver highly customized web-based solutions that support the mission of Duke by understanding the project’s goals, needs, and users.
• Translate requirements using sitemaps, wireframes, usability testing, requirements documents, and other tools/processes as needed to develop a roadmap for both the client and developers.
• Develop a deep understanding of users through user research, user interviews and analyses of user needs.
• Conduct usability testing using low- and/or high-fidelity wireframes, designs or prototypes, including script creation, goal outline, and reporting.
• Analyze data and present research findings and recommendations both to clients and internal team, following UX best practices.
• Guide the final recommendations through the development process to ensure harmonious relationship between content, design, and development.
• Maintain expertise on state of the art and emerging web, mobile and app technologies.
• Recommend and implement best practices for website and mobile user experience.
• Recommend standards for acceptable design and content of Duke application interfaces and processes in coordination with Duke standards and policies.
• Develop time estimates for project deliverables.
• Train clients on website content creation and editing, and create documentation to supplement training as needed.


• 3 - 5 years experience working in a collaborative environment focusing on Information architecture and user experience (UX).
• Strong experience in content strategy, accessibility assessment and testing, taxonomy development, site and application wire-framing, content strategy, usability review, and general consultancy.
• A portfolio outlining your role in past work.
• Strong understanding of site functionality, site architecture, data flow and intuitive navigation schemes are expected.
• Strong experience with wireframing or prototyping tools.
• Experience with content management systems – primarily Drupal (and also Wordpress) is a plus.
• Ability to continuously learn and assimilate new technologies.
• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Motivated, focused and self-guiding, works well on a small team.
• The ability to interact with both technical and non-technical audiences is critical.

• Experience working in higher education
• Experience planning and facilitating workshops

Bachelor’s degree in Library or Information Sciences; a minimum of 3 years Information Architecture, User Experience Design, or other relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
