UX Tune-Up
Carol Barnum
Director and Co-Founder, Usability Center at Southern Polytechnic State University

Time for a tune-up?  Maybe your skills are rusty or maybe you are self-taught “by the book.”  This workshop will focus on some new ways of thinking and doing UX research.

Starting with a quick review of the basics of the two most often used in your UX toolkit, heuristic evaluation and usability testing, we’ll explore new approaches and techniques to increase the value of what you learn and how you report it to others. You’ll take away fresh ideas to try in your next UX project... or in your first.

Morning Focus: Heuristic evaluation/expert review, traditional to today
  • Popular pick in the UX toolkit
  • But why so popular?
  • What do you get with an expert review?
  • Nielsen gives us the 10 most popular guidelines
  • How do you do an expert review?
  • Let’s do one, then talk about it.
  • How do you report your findings?
  • Is there a better way?
  • Let’s explore this.
Afternoon focus: Small, diagnostic usability tests with a twist
  • Popular pick in the UX toolkit
  • What are small studies good for?
  • How can you do them fast, and cheap?
    • First Fridays
    • RITE Method
    • 5-second tests
  • Let’s plan and conduct a test, then talk about it.
  • What happens in a typical day of testing?
  • How do you get at the elusive quality of satisfaction?
  • Deal the cards: Microsoft’s Product Reaction Cards
    • How do they work?
    • What results can you get
    • How can you report them?
    • Let’s explore this.
  • Conclusion: the 1-2 punch
    • Put these two tools together for maximum benefit
    • What each one gives you
    • If you had to choose just one...
