The User Experience Design team is responsible for designing Fidelity Investments' award-winning websites, mobile applications and internal workstations. Our 200+ person team of elite user experience professionals works collaboratively with the business and technology teams to design and deliver online experiences that enable our customers' financial success. The role is based in Durham, NC.
We are currently looking for a lead UX designer / information architect to join our fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and highly collaborative team to lead important strategic and tactical initiatives for our Workplace Investing products. In this role, you’ll be responsible for bringing our workplace clients—some of the nation’s largest employers— and their employees into the design process to understand their attitudes and needs around retirement plans and employee benefits. You’ll translate it all into engaging and hospitable online and responsive-ready experiences to be delivered via desktop, tablet, and mobile devices. You’ll need the creativity to scope, architect, design and support deployment activities for these experiences, as well as the presentation skills to convey your vision to Fidelity’s top executives. You’ll need the management skills to drive the UXD team, provide overall user experience direction for the project, a nd guide consistency and quality of deliverables.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong information architecture and interaction design skills (responsive design experience a plus). Although the role is part of a team that includes user research, content strategy, visual design and front-end development, familiarity and collaboration with those disciplines is a necessity. In addition, given the distributed nature of the overall project team, wherein business partners and development partners sit in other locations, superb communication and “soft” skills are required.
This individual is expected to join the team as the lead interaction designer, under the direction of the UX Director. Tasked with helping establish a north star for a great customer experience, this individual will be leading a cross-functional team toward a standard of excellence and ensuring the design team efforts are in sync with the client’s business goals, expectations and budget on strategic visioning and tactical delivery projects.

The ability to quickly understand the larger context in which the project is happening is a must
Discipline to move high-level strategic concept designs through to detailed designs.
Ability to design a solution that finds a harmonious balance between technical feasibility and the best in customer experience
Ability to communicate and demonstrate the value and rationale of design decisions to business and technology partners
Self-directed with highly developed organizational skills including the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
Ability to create low-fidelity prototypes a plus
Education and Experience:
8+ years experience as an information architect, interaction designer, experience designer or a similar role
Demonstration of past success instilling and protecting a collaborative environment, leading designers within the context of a cross-functional team, and reaching consensus within a diverse culture and fast-paced work flow is a must
Experience with both Waterfall and Agile methodologies
Experience with participatory design (e.g. Design Thinking) a plus
Experience designing interactions that help people engage with complex subject matter and overcome inertia a plus
