Immediately this position will be hired in as a 12-month term position (the position is benefit eligible). The position will be re-evaulated after the initial 12-month term for continued need.
Duke Web Services (DWS) is seeking an Information Architect to join the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Web Services team. The position is responsible for organizing and structuring content, and collaborating with the Creative Director on user experience design for Duke University and Health System websites. The process includes site and content discovery, usability and accessibility assessment and testing, taxonomy development, site and application prototyping, experience wireframing, content development and management, maintenance usability review, and general consultancy.
The position requires a genuine passion for cutting-edge technology, the ability to assess the feasibility of projects, write requirements and specifications, and research and recommend solutions. This position reports to the Manager of Duke Web Services in OIT.
DWS has produced award-winning sites, applications and print materials for many areas of the Duke community.
Work closely with the Creative Director and development team to deliver highly customized web-based solutions that support the mission of Duke by understanding the goals and needs for a project and translating requirements with the use of sitemaps, wireframes, user testing, documenting requirements and other tools/processes as needed into a development roadmap for both the client, art director and development team.
Recommend and implement best practices for website and mobile user experience.
Strong understanding of site functionality, site architecture, data flow and intuitive navigation schemes are expected. Maintain expertise on state of the art and emerging web and mobile technologies.
Recommend standards for acceptable design and content of Duke application interfaces and processes in coordination with Duke standards and policies.
Develop time estimates for project deliverables.
Additional responsibilities include documentation and training for client-maintained sites, content creation and editing.
- 3 - 5 years experience working in a collaborative environment focusing on Information architecture and user experience (UX).
- Strong experience in content discovery, usability and accessibility assessment and testing, taxonomy development, site and application prototyping, experience wire-framing, content development and management, maintenance usability review, and general consultancy.
- Strong experience with wire framing and prototyping tools.
- Experience with content management systems - Drupal and/or Wordpress a plus.
- Ability to continuously learn and assimilate new technologies.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Motivated, focused and self-guiding,works well on a small team.
- The ability to interact with both technical and non-technical audiences is critical.
- Experience working in higher education
- Bachelors degree in Information Sciences and a minimum of 3 years Information Architecture experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is responsible for managing Duke campus# IT infrastructure, service and support including academic research and enterprise applications. OIT provides leadership and expertise in many areas of Information Technology to Duke entities, including faculty, staff, and students. Specific services delivered include voice, data & video communications, institutional email and administrative applications (payroll, financial ledger, student systems etc.), database, web infrastructure, desktop & helpdesk support, student computing, data center services, and high-performance computing & academic software systems. OIT is also responsible for developing/upgrading the physical IT infrastructure around campus and maintaining 23 student computer labs.
