    Duke Web Services (DWS) is seeking an Information Architect/User Experience Designer to join the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Web Services team. The IA/UX Designer is a creative thinker able to translate business strategies and creative concepts into useful and intuitive experiences across various types of web platforms. The position is responsible for organizing and structuring content, and collaborating with the team on user experience design for Duke University and Duke Health websites. The process includes site and content discovery, usability and accessibility assessment and testing, taxonomy development, site and application wire-framing, content development and management, maintenance usability review and QA, and general consultancy.

    The position requires a genuine passion for user research and UX best practices and the ability to assess the feasibility of projects, write requirements and specifications, and research and recommend solutions. This position reports to the Manager of Design and UX within Duke Web Services in OIT.

    DWS has produced award-winning sites and applications for many areas of the Duke community.

    Work Performed

    Work closely with the Creative + User Experience (CrUX) team and development teams to deliver highly customized web-based solutions that support the mission of Duke by understanding the project’s goals, needs, and users.

    Translate requirements using sitemaps, wireframes, usability testing, requirements documents, and other tools/processes as needed to develop a roadmap for both the client and DWS.

    Develop a deep understanding of users through user research, user interviews and analyses of user needs.

    Conduct usability testing using low- and/or high-fidelity wireframes, designs or prototypes, including script creation, goal outline, and reporting.

    Analyze data and present research findings and recommendations both to clients and internal team, following UX best practices.

    Guide the final recommendations through the development process to ensure harmonious relationship between content, design, and development.

    Maintain expertise on state of the art and emerging web and mobile technologies.

    Recommend and implement best practices for website and mobile user experience.

    Recommend standards for acceptable design and content of Duke application interfaces and processes in coordination with Duke standards and policies.

    Develop time estimates for project deliverables.

    Train clients on website content creation and editing, and create documentation to supplement training as needed.

    Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    Required:

    • 3 - 5 years experience working in a collaborative environment focusing on Information architecture and user experience (UX).
    • Strong experience in content strategy, accessibility assessment and testing, taxonomy development, site and application wire-framing, content strategy, usability review, and general consultancy.
    • Strong understanding of site functionality, site architecture, data flow and intuitive navigation schemes are expected.
    • Strong experience with wireframing or prototyping tools.
    • Experience with content management systems - Drupal and/or Wordpress is a plus.
    • Ability to continuously learn and assimilate new technologies.
    • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Motivated, focused and self-guiding, works well on a small team.
    • The ability to interact with both technical and non-technical audiences is critical.

    Preferred:

    • Experience working in higher education

    Education/Training:

    Bachelor’s degree in Library or Information Sciences; a minimum of 3 years Information Architecture, User Experience Design, or other relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is responsible for managing Duke campus’ IT infrastructure, service and support including academic research and enterprise applications. OIT provides leadership and expertise in many areas of Information Technology to Duke entities, including faculty, staff, and students. Specific services delivered include voice, data & video communications, institutional email and administrative applications (payroll, financial ledger, student systems etc.), database, web infrastructure, desktop & helpdesk support, student computing, data center services, and high-performance computing & academic software systems.     -Leading and contributing to improve the content strategy and development process including conducting content audits, defining gaps, developing goals-based strategies, identifying and defining target audience groups, creating abstracts and outlines, developing content, providing direction, editing content, distributing content, etc.

    -Creating effective content solutions across a variety of platforms including web, mobile, email, social media, blogs, print collateral and more

    -Contributing to the strategic development of Information Architecture, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and other content-driven elements for our clients

    -Effectively leading the content strategy for multiple projects and assignments with keen attention to detail

    -Working directly with clients, internal and external teams, vendors and other stakeholders to create, track and manage content estimates, timelines and milestones

    -Work proactively as well as independently on content projects

    -Collaborating with team members, clients and others to ensure a harmonious relationship between content, design and development


    Experience


    The ideal candidate would possess the following skills, interests and experience:

    -Three or more years of experience in content strategy creation and content development

    -Experience in developing interactive content, managing and creating content for websites, social media and traditional media

    -Able to play a leadership role in developing strategies that are designed to help achieve client goals

    -Familiarity with creating content solutions for a variety of user experiences including online, mobile, email, social media, blogs and more

    -Able to relate to and understand a variety of audiences and develop content and strategies that address the needs to these audiences and personas

    -Experience crafting effective headlines, messaging strategies, themes, triggers and value propositions

    -A high-level understanding of SEO, social media and online marketing tactics

    -Well-spoken, presentable and articulate; able to interview subject matter experts and present ideas to clients in a professional manner

    -Minimally a four-year bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, business or other applicable course of study

    -Process-oriented, uncanny attention to detail and strong command of grammar and the written word is a must


    Bonus


    -Experience with Information Architecture

    -Experience using web analytics data to inform decisions

    -Storyboard and scripting for video storytelling

    Compensation


    Commensurate with experience. The position will be paid hourly and average 20 hours per week. Typically, your schedule for each week will be established with at least 3-4 weeks’ notice.
