A designer's job doesn’t stop after the interface loads, it’sonly just begun. Part of being a formidable interactive designer is understanding the medium you are designing for, recognizing its weaknesses, and pushing its strengths. Static design tools will not get you there. Modern designers need to design in time as well as space if they want to engage their visitors. Jason will help you understand how you can evolve your skills using new interactive prototyping tools, discuss techniques, and show you why the future of engagement is anything but static.

For World Usability Day 2014, Triangle UXPA is partnering with Triangle Interactive Marketing Association to bring Jason Cranford Teague to speak about this year's theme: engagement.

Jason brings a wealth of experience to the topic thanks to his experience as UX Lead at Gannett Digital, which oversees over 100 websites and media properties including USA Today. He has spoken at events such as SXSW and written books such as the CSS3 Visual Quickstart Guide and should make an outstanding speaker for TriUXPA's largest event of the year.

This year's event is made possible thanks to partnership with TIMA. In addition to admission for TriUXPA members, TIMA members will also be invited to this year's event.

    Schedule

    Networking 6:00pm - 6:30pm

    Dinner 6:30pm - 7:30pm

    Talk 7:30pm - 9:00pm

    Registration is limited to 72.

    About Jason:

Jason (www.jasonspeaking.com) combines creative and technical skills to help people communicate online. He is a UX Lead at Gannett Digital currently leading the design of The USA TODAY Content Management System. He has worked with clients of all sizes, including Marriott International, AOL, Virgin, Bank of America, The Aspen Institute, The Solar Energy Industry Association, and The USDA. Jason has helped them develop strong online strategies that were quickly and effectively implemented.

As a long standing leader in the Web design community, Jason is well known for being able to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences. He is the author most recently of CSS3 Visual Quickstart Guide (Peachpit, 6th edition 2012) and The NEW Web Typography (Coming Fall 2014 from Focal Press). Jason is also a highly sought after speaker, talking regularly at WebVisions, Voices That Matter, SXSW, edUI, and HOW.

Studying mobile use in context can be tricky. Some desktop research strategies translate easily to mobile, but if you want to capture the way people really use mobile devices, you’re gonna need a bigger toolbox.

Cyd Harrell has the insider’s scoop on how to design and execute mobile research that gets you the most usable data for your moneyundefinedin the lab or out in the field.

Great mobile research gets you more than just the A’s to your Q’s. It tells you whether the site, app, or product you’re building will actually solve the real-life problems your users face. Why settle for anything less?

Conducting mobile research in the lab

    • Assess and adapt desktop research strategies
    • Anticipate technological challenges (screen glare, camera angles, etc.)
    •

Do mobile research in the field

    • Preparing your field kitundefinedand your participants
    • Dealing with permissions, “crowd control,” and physical space
    •

Deepen your research with long-term studies

    • Use experience sampling and diary-type studies for a deeper understanding of participants’ lives
    • Set expectations, send prompts and reminders, and reward participation

Choose and use participant - for optimal results

    • Employ smart recruiting strategies to get the best people Make sure your study delivers robust, usable data

Attend this seminar if you want to:

    • Avoid costly and time-consuming research pitfalls
    • Bombproof your mobile research
    • Try more innovative mobile research methods, but don’t know where to start

The field of mobile research is evolving at breakneck speed as companies respond to consumer demand. And for every research question that people want to solve, there’s a technology available to solve it. The trick is knowing how, when, and why to use each one.

If you’ve got the basics down, but want to uplevel your mobile research, spend an hour with Cyd Harrell and you’ll be well on your way.

    Why Cyd?

Perhaps it’s her poetry influence that makes Cyd Harrell’s usability coaching feel as artful as it is scientific. Regardless, people love learning from herundefinedas you’ll soon find out for yourself.

Cyd was the VP of Research for SF-based UX design firm Bolt|Peters until June 2012, when Facebook acquired the company. While there, she helped clients such as Sony, Volkswagen, and Rdio to conduct remote research and real-time usability studies. Before that, she the led desktop experience and design standards groups at Charles Schwab.

Cyd also is renowned for building communities, which she’s done in San Francisco (as co-founder of Women on the Web), and at Code for America (where she’s a mentor). She’s also an advisor to ethnio, a product that helps people recruit research participants.

Until you attend her workshop, go ahead and benefit from Cyd’s masterful knowledge of mobile-UX research by following her on Twitter @cydharrell.
