    Jeff Patton
    UX Design Edge

Jeff makes use of over 20 years of product design and development experience to help companies create great products. Jeff is author of the bestselling O’Reilly book User Story Mapping which describes a simple holistic approach to using stories in Agile development without losing sight of the big picture.

    Story Mapping Product Experience

A story map is a simple way to visualize a product idea from a user experience perspective. Mapping your product's story uses the same approach script writers use to think through a movie or TV story idea. It's fast, collaborative, and telling your product's story helps you spot the holes in your thinking. Once created, a map lets you think through options and alternative ideas that'll make your product better. It's easy to slice out what you think is a smallest viable product, and to identify the next experiment that'll help you validate your product concept.

In this three hour workshop, you'll learn story mapping by building a simple map collaboratively with others. You'll learn how to use story maps to make sense of how users and customers do things today, and how they might do things better with your product. You'll learn how to use story maps to drive Lean Startup style experimentation, as well as heads-down Agile software development. For UX practitioners specifically, we'll talk about your role as designer and facilitator to help your organization engage in effective product design.

    Workshop flow:
    • After a brief introduction, you'll spend the first hour learning the basics in a hands-on story mapping exercise collaborating with others in the class
    • We'll sum up what we've learned, then take a 15 minute coffee break. You'll need it.
    • During the second hour, you'll work hands-on with a story map for a mobile product. You'll use that map to identify minimum viable product releases, experiments, and safe development strategies
    • In the remaining time we'll discuss how story mapping fits into a holistic product design and development process

    Abi Jones

The virtual seminar will begin promptly at 1:30 PM, preceded by 15 minutes for socializing and networking. Come early to meet your fellow Triangle UXPA members and talk shop!

    * You must be present at the host location to view this webinar.

People are creating rich, customized user experiences using the sensors on devices, and you’re eager to join them. You can’t wait to leverage the magic of ultra-contextual design. But where do you start? There’s a dizzying array of sensors out there, from accelerometers to gyroscopes, and not every sensor technology is right for your users.

Abi Jones pairs journey maps with an understanding of sensor technology to uncover and alleviate points of friction in the product experience. To her, success is nothing less than the seamless integration of technology into everyday life, in ways that make it easier and better.

User research lies at the heart of ultra-contextual design. It requires a deep understanding of the way your users interact with your product and a clear sense of where those interactions might be improved. Nail this and you’ll have no problem figuring out how and when to use embedded sensors and related data to create amazing experiences.

Establish context for user experiences with visual empathy

    • Use empathy mapping, service blueprints and a variety of research methods to understand context for the customer journey
    • Determine the “moments of truth” in the customer experience

Evaluate whether sensor-informed context makes sense for your users

      • Review the panoply of sensors that are available across all device categories
      • Test the efficacy of each type of sensor within the context of your application

Use journey maps to drive sensor-informed context

      • Use remote user research to uncover your customers’ pain points
      • Identify the information that’s essential for creating a great user experience

Ask for more data without alienating users

      • Add the human touch to all of your asks
      • Understand how often, how much and how to ask for user information

Attend this seminar if you want to:

      • Leverage sensor technology, but don’t know where to start
      • Figure out whether sensor-informed context is right for you and your users
      • Create better research plans

Contextual design combines the user centricity of customer journeys and the environmental awareness of sensors to create remarkable experiences. It helps mountain rescue teams save lives and busy do-it-yourselfers find the right tool for the job. But if you want to be successful, you’ve got to get down to the basics. Understand what your users need to accomplish. Find out what’s getting in their way. And then explore how sensor-informed technology can change that. Are you ready?

      Why Abi?

Abi Jones designs ways to interact with Google’s Knowledge Graph, a semantic network of over 570 million objects (and 18 billion related facts) representing the continually growing realm of human knowledge. She especially likes croissants, Tchaikovsky's violin concerto, and the periodic table of elements. When not designing interfaces for the computable portions of human knowledge, Abi writes a webcomic at and rides her trusty 7-speed Schwinn between the redwoods and beaches of Santa Cruz. The book selected pushes the edges a bit, and is called "Designing for Emerging Technologies:  UX for Genomics, Robotics, and the Internet of Things".  It's a collection 20 chapters in a wildly rich set of UX frontiers, each chapter by a different UX specialist.  It's a heavy read, so it would be fine if you only select and read the chapters that most interest you.
